Living Life Untethered:

My Journey to Freedom

I'm Tara Narain (1972), a 50+ location-independent spiritual nomad and holistic coach specialising in Ashtanga yoga, mindfulness, and Ayurvedic principles. As a yoga teacher, entrepreneur, and designer, I thrive on transformation and growth through my unconventional way of living. Born in the Netherlands with Indian roots and a grandfather who was a Vedic pandit. He planted the seeds to my spiritual path, introducing me to yoga philosophy, mantra chanting, meditation, pranayama, and Vedic Sanskrit texts.

Early Life and Entrepreneurial Journey

Growing up in the Netherlands as a petite South Asian woman, I faced unique challenges in a predominantly white society. Despite these obstacles, I persevered and pursued my passion for design. However, finding a design job proved difficult, and I soon realised that I wasn't suited for a traditional 9-to-5 career.

Instead, I channeled my entrepreneurial spirit into building my own educational company. Through hard work and determination, I successfully grew the business to a nationwide franchise. Although this journey was rewarding, it took a toll on my physical and mental health.

Discovering Yoga and Healing

My journey with yoga began when I was 40, with intensive Bikram yoga practice. I even participated in the Dutch national championships/demonstrations in 2015 and 2016. However, as I deepened my practice, I felt drawn to my Indian roots and the traditional teachings of Ashtanga yoga were calling.

I embarked on an intensive 500 hour Ashtanga teacher training in Rishikesh, India, which profoundly transformed my life. This experience not only helped me develop a stronger physical practice but also cultivated a deeper understanding of yoga philosophy, pranayama, and meditation.

Nomadic Lifestyle & Community Building

When the pandemic hit, my newly opened yoga studio in Arnhem, The Netherlands, was forced to close. Despite this setback, I remained committed to nurturing my Mysore Ashtanga community, which continued to thrive. However, the second lockdown made it clear that I needed to reassess my path.

Seeking a fresh start, I sold my belongings and relocated to Bonaire with a single suitcase and my coffee machine. I was determined to embark on a nomadic lifestyle, building community and sharing traditional healing practices along the way. In Bonaire, I established another Ashtanga community in my own Yoga & Wellness Centre where I also offered Ayurvedic and healing massages.

After parting ways with my business partner and ending my 24-year marriage, I felt an inexplicable pull to return to India. I was honoured to practice with Paramaguru Sharath Jois, grandson of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois and founder of the Ashtanga Yoga method, for two transformative months. Followed by a full month of intensive with my teacher Laruga Glaser, where I deepened my practice of the intermediate series and took home new teaching skills.

Where Passion meets Experience

With over 24 years of experience in education and entrepreneurship, I've developed a unique blend of teaching, coaching, and design expertise. As a seasoned educator, I've taught teachers, coached franchisees, and created several curricula, honing my ability to deliver effective learning experiences.

In the yoga realm, I've accumulated extensive teaching experience, earning me a Yoga Alliance 500 E-RYT and YACEP accreditation. For eight years, I've taught Mysore-style yoga in my own Shala’s, and I've had the privilege of assisting and teaching alongside Petri Räisänen in Thailand for the past three years.

My design background, with a Bachelor's degree in Fashion Design, continues to influence my work. I enjoy designing branding and spaces that reflect a company's vision and mission.

My passion projects include designing my own yoga studios, including a shala with a coffee lounge and shop in the Netherlands and a yoga and wellness studio in Bonaire.

As a detail-oriented and organised individual, I've been sought after for event planning and management. Notably, I assisted with branding, marketing, and organising the Arnhem Yoga Festival in 2019 and spearheaded the inaugural Yoga and Wellness Week with a Beach Festival on Bonaire in 2023.

Embracing Freedom and Empowering Others

At 52, I feel more alive than ever. My devotion to yoga has given me a second life, and I'm passionate about inspiring others to live their life in full freedom. I believe that age is just a number, and that anyone can live their dream life.

Through my journey, I've learned that maintaining a healthy lifestyle and routine is possible, even while traveling. I thrive on immersing myself in new surroundings, exploring nature, cultures, and connecting with like-minded individuals.
